2024 WSOPC Tallinn Day 6: Phil Gross Emotionally Wins €555 NLH Ring

Poker Jason Glazer 25.07.2024

The action was booming at the 2024 World Series of Poker Circuit (WSOPC) Tallinn at Olympic Park Casino and the Hilton Tallinn Park on Wednesday’s Day 6. Players were battling €1 million guaranteed WSOP Circuit Tallinn €1,500 Main Event with two more opening flights taking place, while others were busy showcasing their skills in the two-day Event #7: €1,100 PLO 4&5 Cards ring event, which attracted a record-breaking field. This is on top of the main side events and satellites throughout the day.

Germany’s Phil Gross was easily the star on Wednesday as he emotionally won his first taste at WSOP gold after defeating a field of 617 entries, including Ukraine’s Oleksii Natoptanyi heads-up, on the third and final day of the 2024 WSOP Circuit Tallinn Event #3: €555 No-Limit Hold’em for €55,210 and the coveted WSOP Circuit gold ring. This is not all, as Gross will have an opportunity to add more hardware as his victory earned him an invitation to the 2025 WSOP Tournament of Champions freeroll, where he will be playing for a WSOP gold bracelet along for a share of $1 million.

Gross came onto the poker scene in Tallinn around this time last year and instantly caught the attention of many with his energy, sense of humor, and warm smile. Some described his play as unorthodox, but Gross appears to time his aggression at the right times. Last July, Gross dazzled the crowd and recorded his first cash at The Hendon Mob when he took runner-up in the 2023 Kings of Tallinn Summer Showdown €1,100 Main Event for €72,700.

Phill Gross came second in the 2023 Kings of Tallinn Summer Showdown €1,100 Main Event

His second cash was also a runner-up finish in May when he won €660 and bounties in the 2024 OlyBet Spring Mix €150 Turbo Bounty. He certainly didn’t want it to happen again for his third career cash but now he has a new standard with his first victory in one of the most prestigious events of the year in Northern Europe.

Gross began the day with the chip lead, but by far, it wasn’t a coast-to-coast affair. In fact, Gross nearly hit the rail in seventh place when he got his short stack in with ace-queen and managed a chop against the ace-king held by Latvia’s Tigrans Vilums. Gross mounted a comeback from there and aggressively paved his way to WSOP Circuit glory.

The victory was bittersweet at the end, with Gross’s glowing rail emotionally surrounding Gross after the victory with emotional hugs.

€1,100 PLO 4&5 Plays Down to a Winner Today

The two-day Event #7: €1,100 PLO 4&5 played down from 198 entries down to just 8 hopefuls in the hunt for PLO glory. Last year’s winner Jon Kyte bowed out in 44th place in his quest for back-to-back ring titles but many others made the money with 23 players getting paid at least €2,200 for double their buy-in.

Ireland’s Greg King made a deep run but was unable to find the final table after bowing out in 12th place for €3,650, while 2019 WSOP Europe 8-Game champion Espen Sandvik bubbled the final table in ninth place for €5,100.

The final eight players each locked up €6,000 with much more to come with the winner slated to receive a whopping €44,500 top prize along with a precious WSOP Circuit gold ring and an invite to win a bracelet in the $1 million guaranteed 2025 WSOP Tournament of Champions.

Norwegian Jan Holte leads the way with 2,295,000 for more than double his nearest opponent in fellow Norwegian Lars Romundstad. The popular Finn Jussi “Potti-Jussi” Mattila, Denmark’s Gisle Olsen, Finland’s Riku Kolvurinne, Lithuania’s Stanislovas Vinicenka, Latvia’s Renars Stepins, and Finland’s Sami Paananen are also in the mix hoping that today is there day to win a ring.

The action will resume at 2 p.m. with the live stream commentated by George Sandford and guests will begin 30 minutes later at OlyBet.tv and other channels with hole cards explode. Sandford is an avid PLO player himself, so expect a detailed look into some of the strategy involved in today’s final table.
